DIY Myths Debunked

So you’ve had a stressful week at work and just want to kick back and relax with your feet up at the weekend. That’s until you remember you have a list of DIY jobs around the house that you must take care of! We all tackle DIY differently – some of us believe we can just about attempt any job that needs doing, whereas others are wary to lift a paint brush. No matter what level you’re at, you’ve probably found yourself browsing the web or YouTube looking for tips and tricks to make things easier. With access to the internet, it’s easier than ever to find information on DIY tasks, which include walk through’s and video demonstrations which leave you asking yourself, ‘how can anything go wrong?’

However, it’s this ease of access that’s making it easier than ever for rookie DIY’ers to offer their knowledge to those in desperate need of advice. Unfortunately, the information that’s provided is not always correct, and can lead to shabby DIY jobs that not only look unprofessional, but can be dangerous too. That’s why we’ve decided to put together a few of the most common DIY myths that frequently circulate the internet.

#1 – You can do everything yourself

We really felt like we had to make one thing clear, certain DIY jobs should not be carried out by yourself but should instead be left to the professionals. As previously mentioned, the internet is awash with ‘how to’ videos that make any task seem possible. Although you can carry out the majority of your household DIY jobs yourself, you must be prepared to call a professional when you feel out of your depth. An example of this is jobs that involve electricity and gas – even though you might be trying to save your hard earned cash, it’s not as important as your safety.

 #2 – DIY is a doddle

We’ve become accustomed to TV shows that involve transforming the whole interior of a house easily within an hour – with tea breaks in between! However, you’ve got to remember that not only have they got a whole army of DIY professionals at their disposal, it’s edited to fit in an hour TV slot! Make sure you plan enough time to complete the task properly, allowing extra time for things such as allowing coats of paint to dry or preparation.

#3 – Help save money – buy cheap tools

Now, we know we offer tools at very competitive prices here at Alan Wadkins, but at least you know you’ll be getting high quality items that are made to last. With the ever growing popularity of discount stores and people looking for a bargain, it’s very tempting to purchase tools and materials that have been cheaply made and are likely to break midway through your work. If you actually manage to make it to the end, you’re often left with a poor quality finish. Always set a budget when carrying out any DIY work, and try to buy the best quality products that are available within your price range.
