Top 10 DIY Home Hacks

Being a homeowner can prove difficult at times, and you may feel like you spend the whole of your spare time tidying up and cleaning – and we’re sick of it too! Alan Wadkins Toolstore has put together a guide on how to make some of your daily tasks a little bit easier with a little bit of DIY!

Storage

For Grooming Tools…

How many times have you misplaced the nail clippers, tweezers and other grooming tools and you later find them hidden somewhere when you’ve already bought some new ones? If you install a magnetic strip on the inside of your medicine cabinet, it gives you a place where you can store your grooming necessities. You can also use magnetic strips for a host of important household items, including your door keys!

Spray Bottle Storage

Our under sink cupboard can become littered with household spray bottles and cleaning items – quite often empty! Why not install a clothes rail inside the cupboard, just below the sink? You can use the rail to hook spray bottles and cleaning cloths onto so they’re no longer hogging space on the floor of the cupboard.

Pets

Removing Pet Hair

Pet hair can be a real pain to get rid of, especially when it makes its way into the fibres of our carpets and cushions. It can sometimes feel like you’re fighting a losing battle when even your hoover fails to pick up all the hairs, which is why we love this trick! Once you’ve hoovered your carpet, get a window squeegee and rub the surface of the carpet in one direction – the hairs will come straight up!

Protect Your Furniture

This is a handy tip for dog owners whose pooches haven’t quite learned that it’s naughty to chew on your expensive furniture! You can make your own bitter tasting spray bottle by filling a spray bottle with a mixture of white wine vinegar and apple cider vinegar, and they spray it onto the legs of your furniture – stopping your pooch from putting their mouths anywhere near it.

Cleaning

Carpet Stains

There’s no worse feeling than spilling a drink or food onto your newly laid carpet, which leaves homeowners dashing to their nearest 24-hour store on the hunt for a carpet cleaner – which can be expensive! If you’ve spilled your cup of tea or coffee, rub beer into the stain to lift it straight up. If you’ve spilled food which contains fat and oil, spread baking powder on the stain before hoovering it up and wiping clean with a damp cloth.

Shower Head Stains

Your shower head is highly susceptible to hard water stains and soap scum. Tie a plastic bag filled with vinegar around the shower head and secure with an elastic band. Leave it for a couple of hours and the stains will wash away with ease!

DIY

Stripped Screws

We’ve all been left tearing our hair out when we get to remove the last screw and it just won’t budge! Use a rubber band placed between the screw head and your drill bit. If you press down with enough pressure, the rubber band will help grip the screw and it will come straight out.

Dropping Nails…

How many times have you had to get down from the ladder when you’ve dropped a nail that you were holding in your mouth? If you glue a small magnet to the base of your hammer to hold the nails for you, you’ll never drop a nail again!

Décor

Sliding Rugs

We’re forever repositioning rugs when they’ve managed to end up half way across the other end of the living room. Most rugs don’t have any anti-slip material on the underside, so a great way to add your own is by adding lines of silicone to stop them moving on the smooth surface.

Towel Rails

No matter how tidy you try to be, towels always end up on the floor of your bathroom – making it look untidy. A great tip is to install your old door knobs onto your bathroom wall to create stylish towel holders!
