How To Prepare Your Garden For Spring

It’s finally over; we can finally say we’re well and truly getting some spring weather now we’ve left the wet and miserable winter behind. However, if you’ve headed into the garden recently to soak up some sun or breath in some fresh, spring air, chances are you’ve been left horrified by the toll of winter on your beloved garden. You’re more than likely faced with a garden filled with weeds, overgrown hedges and mouldy, dirt-ridden footpaths. But don’t worry, you can soon get your garden back by following a few simple steps and taking advantage of the range of garden tools and machinery from Alan Wadkins Toolstore.

Step 1 – Clear The Space
Although nothing much grows substantially over the winter, unfortunately for us weeds continue to grow all year round. This means that areas that were well maintained, such as your plant beds and lawn, have probably been overcome with weeds or other unwanted plants. That means that your first port of call should be to clear any unwanted weeds from your footpaths and plant beds. There’s no quick way around this, you’ll have to be prepared to get dirty and pull the weeds out by hand where possible to make sure you get them from the root. You can use a range of garden tools to help you loosen up the soil, such as a weed fork for the plant beds and a stainless steel weeder to get in between paving slabs and bricks.

Step 2 – Get Trimming

Whilst your grass and shrubbery won’t have seen much growth over the winter, we’ll take a guess that you probably last cut your grass or trimming your hedges in Autumn last year. That means that your garden will still have had several months to grow – so will require a trim to tidy things up a little. There’s a shed load of tools you can use to help you out here such as a lawn mower, hedge trimmer, strimmer and even a leaf blower to rid your garden of any leaves and debris that are still left over. Quick Tip

If you have any larger bushes or trees that could do with a trim, use an appropriate tool such as a hedge trimmer for bushes and a chainsaw for larger trees to shape them, and then use a shredder to compact of the trimmings to you can dispose of easily.

Step 3 – Get The Water Ready

With the wet and windy conditions of winter, your garden will have accumulated a fair amount of moss, debris and dirt on the footpaths, lower brickwork and even on your greenhouse or window sills. This grime can sometime be hard to shift – after all, it’s been there for months – so may require some force to clear it away. Using a pressure washer on the floor will lift the dirt up easily – paving the way for a clean footpath. For the window sills and greenhouse, you’ll be able to use warm soapy water with an old cloth and a fair bit of elbow grease to remove any unwanted residue.

Finishing Touches

Your garden should now almost be back to it’s pre-winter peak, but there are a few other changes you can make that even Charlie Dimmock would be proud of. You can put your DIY skills to the test by making new trellis or garden benches to make spending time in your garden even more enjoyable. All you need is a few pieces of suitable wood from your local timber merchant and some tools to get your started! We recommend and trusty hand saw and a cordless drill – they’ll see you right for many DIY jobs in the garden.
